Iceland volcano: Grimsvotn eruption hits flights

Iceland has closed its main international airport and cancelled domestic flights after its most active volcano, Grimsvotn, began erupting. coach outlet A plume of smoke has risen 20km (12 miles) into the sky from the volcano. But Iceland's Meteorological Office says the eruption should not cause widespread disruption to air traffic. Last year, ash clouds from another Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokul, led to the closure of a large section of European airspace. Governments feared that ash particles could cause aircraft engines to fail, and the closure caused chaos to air travellers. Different ash Women Nike Dunk SB High Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, a spokeswoman for the Isavia civil aviation authority said: "We have closed the area until we know better what effect the ash will have." The authority said Keflavik airport, the country's main hub, would remain shut for the rest of Sunday. But officials say the eruption is unlikely to have the same impact as Eyjafjallajokul in 2010. University of Iceland geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson said this was Grimsvotn's largest eruption for 100 years, "much bigger and more intensive than Eyjafjallajokull". Coach Bracelets He added: "There is a very large area in south-east Iceland where there is almost total darkness and heavy fall of ash. But it is not spreading nearly as much. The winds are not as strong as they were in Eyjafjallajokull." He said this ash was coarser than last year's eruption, falling to the ground more quickly instead of floating long distances. Europe's air traffic control organisation said on Sunday: "There is currently no impact on European or trans-Atlantic flights and the situation is expected to remain so for the next 24 hours. "Aircraft operators are constantly being kept informed of the evolving situation." Women Nike Dunk SB Low However, weather officials warned that ash could reach northern Scotland by Tuesday and parts of Britain, France and Spain by Thursday or Friday if the eruption continues at the same rate, according to Reuters. In Scotland, a meeting of the government's resilience committee chaired by Transport Secretary Keith Brown is currently being held to discuss the possible impact. Threat to engines Grimsvotn lies under the the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull in south-east Iceland. When it last erupted in 2004, transatlantic flights had to be re-routed south of Iceland, but no airports were closed. coach outlet Last year's outpouring of ash from Eyjafjallajokull led to the largest closure of European airspace since World War II. About 10 million travellers were affected and some questioned whether the shutdown was an over-reaction. However, a scientific study published last month said the safety concerns had been well founded. Women Nike Dunk High Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Iceland said ash particles from the early part of the Eyjafjallajokull eruption were especially abrasive, posing a possible threat to aircraft engines.

Uganda's Kizza Besigye 'put under house arrest'

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been prevented from leaving his house by police, as the new parliamentary session is set to open. coach factory outlet The police say that they had information he had mobilised supporters and was about to commit a crime. He has been arrested four times in recent weeks during opposition protests at the rising cost of living. Human rights groups have criticised the police crackdown on the protests, which left nine people dead. The BBC's Joshua Mmali in Kampala says Dr Besigye left his house in a car and was stopped by a police roadblock. Kids Dunk High They said he was under "preventive arrest" and gave him two options - either to return home or to go the police station. He went home and his party says he is effectively under house arrest. Dr Besigye says he was cheated in February's election, although he mustered only half as many votes as President Yoweri Museveni. The government accuses him of using trying to organise an Egypt-style uprising. Changing the law Coach Belts From his house on Friday morning, he told the BBC's Network Africa programme he felt ashamed that Uganda had "regressed back to the dark days of previous atrocious dictatorships". "When we used to have a law called the preventative detention act under which political opponents could be detained indefinitely by the regime in power," he said. "I have no idea what the conditions of my house arrest are... they didn't say for how long." He says he has instructed his lawyers to challenge the police action in court. Kids Dunk Low As the new parliament session begins, President Museveni wants MPs to urgently change the law so that people accused of crimes, including rioting and economic sabotage, are not entitled to bail for six months. BBC East Africa correspondent Will Ross says this is widely seen as an attempt to lock up Dr Besigye. It is also feared that this law could be used to detain journalists. On Wednesday, President Museveni wrote a letter to the state-owned New Vision newspaper describing local and foreign media, including the BBC, as "enemies of Uganda's recovery" for their coverage of the protests. Coach Scarves Last month, riots broke out in Kampala in protest at the rough treatment meted out to Dr Besigye by the security services during his arrest on 29 April. Plain-clothed policemen were filmed beating up his supporters, smashing the window of his car and dousing the inside with pepper spray and tear gas before manhandling him into a vehicle and driving off. The authorities say Dr Besigye provoked them - and he was charged with inciting violence. Mr Museveni came to power in 1986, following years of misrule under Milton Obote and Idi Amin. D&G shoes He was initially praised as part of a new generation of African leaders determined to raise living standards and bring democracy to the continent. But recently, donors have cut off some aid amid concern about his commitment to human rights.

Google chairman Schmidt promises privacy controls

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has promised that the firm will simplify the process by which Android phone users agree to share their data. coach factory outlet It follows questions in the US Senate about how much location information is stored by mobile handsets. Speaking in the UK at a conference on privacy, he also revealed that Google plans to offer web users more control over their online profile. Mr Schmidt insisted that the company took the matter "very seriously". He told attendees at the Big Tent debate in Hertfordshire that his firm was working on "a series of projects" aimed at increasing transparency. Cheap Nike Dunk Low Those include a revised Google Dashboard, where users can see what data they have shared with the search giant. "It is worth stressing that we can only do this with data you have shared with Google. We can't be a vacuum-cleaner for the whole internet," he said. Mr Schmidt stressed that Google was on the side of consumers when it came to privacy. "In general we take the position that you own your data and should be able to opt in or out of a service," he said. But he added that if users gave consent for sharing data, it would help Google improve its services. coach outlet "If you choose to give us that information we can do a better job. If we know a little bit more about you we can offer better targeted search," he explained. Super injunctions revealed A recent hearing in the US Senate quizzed Google on the amount of data stored on Android handsets. The company argued that it allows people to opt out of location-based services. But Mr Schmidt conceded that the terms and conditions whereby users sign up to services needs to be simplified. "We intent to do that," he said. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB High He predicted that such services would be more heavily regulated in the future. During a lively debate on the issue of privacy, it was revealed to the Big Tent audience, alongside several names of current super-injunction holders, that more data has been collected in the last seven years than in the whole of previous human history. Simon Davies, head of Privacy International, said it was a mistake to see privacy and the needs of corporations as conflicting. coach outlet "There is this myth that privacy stifles innovation. It helps to reassure consumers, therefore encourages innovation," he said. Meanwhile media executive Peter Bazalgette argued that people should have the right to delete data to give them a clean slate from, for instance, compromising pictures on social networks. At the same time, some would choose to share more information. "Individuals will sell personal data in return for content," he said. Not everyone felt that Google Dashboard went far enough when it came to protecting personal data. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB Low What people really need is a "dashboard for their lives", argued David Alexander, director of Mydex, a social enterprise that is designing a platform where people can manage all the data they share with others. Creating such a "personal data eco-system" would allow people "to stand on an equal footing with government and big corporations", when it comes to data sharing, he said. cheap coach handbags outlet Mr Alexander suggested that Google would be very welcome to sign up to it but that it would have to agree not to share information with advertisers.

Earlier this month the former actor and his wife Maria Shriver said they were separating after 25 years of marriage. Ms Shriver moved out of their Los Angeles mansion earlier in the year. The 63-year-old former governor has maintained a high public profile and worked to revive his movie career since finishing a seven-year run as California governor in January. 'Truly sorry' coach outlet The name of the former member of Mr Schwarzenegger's household staff with whom he fathered the child has not been made public. But reports said she worked for the family for 20 years and retired in January. Libya: ICC prosecutor seeks warrant for Gaddafi

The International Criminal Court chief prosecutor is seeking the arrest of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi and two others for crimes against humanity. coach outlet Luis Moreno-Ocampo said Col Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi bore the greatest responsibility for "widespread and systematic attacks" on civilians. ICC judges must still decide whether or not to issue warrants for their arrest. The Libyan government has already said it will ignore the announcement. Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid Kaim said the court was a "baby of the European Union designed for African politicians and leaders" and its practices were "questionable". cheap nike shoes store Libya did not recognise its jurisdiction, like a few other African countries and the United States, he added. 'Inner circle' Mr Moreno-Ocampo said that after reviewing more than 1,200 documents and 50 interviews with key insiders and witnesses, his office had evidence showing that Col Gaddafi had "personally ordered attacks on unarmed Libyan civilians". "His forces attacked Libyan civilians in their homes and in public spaces, shot demonstrators with live ammunition, used heavy weaponry against participants in funeral processions, and placed snipers to kill those leaving mosques after prayers," he told a news conference in The Hague. coach factory outlet "The evidence shows that such persecution is still ongoing as I speak today in the areas under Gaddafi control. Gaddafi forces have prepared a list with names of alleged dissidents, and they are being arrested, put into prisons in Tripoli, tortured and made to disappear," he added. Mr Moreno-Ocampo continued: "His [Col Gaddafi's] second-oldest son, Saif al-Islam, is the de facto prime minister and Sanussi, Gaddafi's brother-in-law, is his right-hand man - the executioner, the head of military intelligence. He commanded personally some of the attacks." The prosecutor insisted he was "almost ready" for a trial, based on the testimony, particularly of those who had escaped from Libya. Libya's opposition National Transitional Council praised the ICC move. Nike Dunk High But its vice-president, Abdel Hafez Ghoga, said: "We would like him [Col Gaddafi] to be tried in Libya first before being put on trial in an international court." Selective justice? Earlier, Mr Moreno-Ocampo said the three men were suspected of committing crimes against humanity in two categories - murder and persecution - under the Rome Statute, which established the court. The charges cover the days following the start of anti-government protests on 15 February. Between 500 and 700 people are believed to have been killed in that month alone. Coach Sunglasses ICC prosecutors are also studying evidence about the alleged commission of war crimes once the situation developed into an armed conflict. This includes allegations of rape and attacks against sub-Saharan Africans wrongly perceived to be mercenaries. An inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council is expected to submit its report on the alleged war crimes to the UN Security Council on 7 June. Mr Moreno-Ocampo said he was acting in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 1970, which referred the situation in Libya to the ICC. The Pre-Trial Chamber's judges may decide to accept the prosecutor's application, reject it, or ask him for more information. Nike Dunk Low If a warrant for Col Gaddafi is issued, it would only be the second time the ICC has sought a warrant for a sitting head of state. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted for genocide in Darfur. Amnesty International said the international community must not allow justice to appear selective, because what was happening in Syria was "equal to if not worse than the situation in Libya". Overnight, Libyan state television reported Nato aircraft had bombed an oil terminal in the eastern port of Ras Lanuf. Coach Boots The alleged raid came after insurgents said they had taken full control of the western city of Misrata. The rebels also said they had defeated two brigades of troops loyal to Col Gaddafi in the city of Zintan, south-east of Tripoli, over the weekend.

Switzerland: Zurich votes to keep assisted suicide

Voters in Zurich, Switzerland, have rejected proposed bans on assisted suicide and "suicide tourism". coach factory outlet Some 85% of the 278,000 votes cast opposed the ban on assisted suicide and 78% opposed outlawing it for foreigners, Zurich authorities said. About 200 people commit assisted suicide each year in Zurich, including many foreign visitors. It has been legal in Switzerland since 1941 if performed by a non-physician with no vested interest in the death. Assistance can be provided only in a passive way, such as by providing drugs. Active assistance - helping a person to take or administer a product - is prohibited. 'Last resort' Cheap Women Nike Dunk High While opinion polls indicated that most Swiss were in favour of assisted suicide, they had also suggested that many were against what has become known as suicide tourism. Many citizens from Germany, France and other nations come to die in Switzerland because the practice remains illegal abroad. One local organisation, Dignitas, says it has helped more than 1,000 foreigners to take their own lives. Another group, Exit, will only help those who are permanently resident in the country - saying the process takes time, and much counselling for both patients and relatives. Coach Heels&Sandals Its vice-president, Bernhard Sutter, said the result showed Swiss voters believed in "self-determination at the end of life". The referendum had offered a proposal to limit suicide tourism, by imposing a residency requirement of at least one year in the Zurich area in order to qualify for the service. It was backed by two conservative political parties, the Evangelical People's Party and the Federal Democratic Union. But the major parties of the left and right, including the Swiss People's Party and the Social Democratic Party, had called on their supporters to vote against both motions. Cheap Women Nike Dunk Low The BBC's Imogen Foulkes, in Geneva, says the size of the vote against a ban on assisted suicide reflects the widely held belief among the Swiss that is their individual right to decide when and how to die. Their rejection of the proposal to limit assisted suicide to those living in Zurich shows that concerns about suicide tourism carry less weight with voters than their conviction that the right to die is universal, our correspondent says. But the debate in Switzerland will continue, she adds. Polls show voters do want clearer national legislation setting out conditions under which assisted suicide is permitted. The Swiss government is planning to revise the country's federal laws on assisted suicide. coach outlet It has said it is looking to make sure it was used only as a last resort by the terminally ill, and to limit suicide tourism.
