Nuclear phase-out can make Germany trailblazer - Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said a decision to phase out nuclear power by 2022 can make her country a trailblazer in renewable energy. coach outlet Ms Merkel said Germany would reap economic benefits from the move. Germany is the biggest industrial power to renounce nuclear energy, in a policy reversal for the governing centre-right coalition. Mrs Merkel set up a panel to review nuclear power following the crisis at Fukushima in Japan. The crisis, triggered by an earthquake and tsunami in March, led to mass anti-nuclear protests across Germany. Nike outlet The anti-nuclear drive boosted Germany's Green party, which took control of the Christian Democrat stronghold of Baden-Wuerttemberg, in late March. Analysts say Mrs Merkel may be eyeing a future coalition with the Greens. 'Opportunities' Mrs Merkel said that in its "fundamental" rethink of policy, Germany could set an example for other countries. "We believe we as a country can be a trailblazer for a new age of renewable energy sources," the German chancellor was quoted as saying by AFP news agency. coach factory outlet "We can be the first major industrialised country that achieves the transition to renewable energy with all the opportunities - for exports, development, technology, jobs - it carries with it." She also said that electricity in the future should be "safer and at the same time reliable and affordable", linking the decision to step back from nuclear power to the crisis in Japan. "We learned from Fukushima that we have to deal differently with risks," she said. Under the German plan the country's seven oldest reactors - which were taken offline for a safety review immediately after the Japanese crisis - would never be used again. Nike sb shoes An eighth plant - the Kruemmel facility in northern Germany, which was already offline and has been plagued by technical problems - would also be shut down for good. Six others would go offline by 2021 at the latest and the three newest by 2022. The previous German government - a coalition of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens - decided to shut down Germany's nuclear power stations by 2021. However, last September Ms Merkel's coalition scrapped those plans - announcing it would extend the life of the country's nuclear reactors by an average of 12 years. cheap coach handbags outlet The decision to extend was unpopular in Germany even before the radioactive leaks at the Fukushima plant. Following Fukushima, Mrs Merkel promptly scrapped her extension plan, and announced a review. Germany's nuclear industry has argued that an early shutdown would be hugely damaging to the country's industrial base. nike dunk shoes Before March's moratorium on the older power plants, Germany relied on nuclear power for 23% of its energy.

At least 10 people have been killed and about 20 injured in a bomb blast near an army barracks in northern Nigeria, local officials say. coach outlet The explosion hit the Mamy market in the city of Bauchi late on Sunday. The injured were taken to hospital. No group has so far said it carried out the blast. It came just hours after Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as Nigeria's president for a new four-year term in the capital Abuja. Another - smaller - explosion hit a beer parlour on the outskirts of Abuja, causing minor injuries, officials say. The cause of the blast was not immediately known. Popular spot Cheap Kids Dunk Low The blast at the popular Mamy market happened at about 2000 local time (1900 GMT), officials said, describing it as "powerful". Other reports say there were three explosions in quick succession. "There were lots of people since it's a Sunday evening. People were relaxing, eating and drinking," Bauchi state police commissioner Abdulkadir Indabawa was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. Army barracks in Nigeria sometimes contain small market areas where traders sell food, drink and other goods to soldiers and civilians. Coach Sunglasses All roads leading to the barracks were sealed off by security personnel. Earlier on Sunday, Mr Jonathan was sworn in as president during a lavish ceremony in Abuja, following his clear election victory. Mr Jonathan was promoted from vice-president after Umaru Yar'Adua died in office in 2010. The April election was largely considered free and fair, but hundreds of people were killed in three days of rioting following the announcement of the result. Mr Jonathan, 53, won nearly 60% of the vote. Cheap D&G shoes He is a southern Christian and had defeated his leading challenger from the mainly Muslim north. G8 summit: Sarkozy offers Libya's Gaddafi 'options'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has urged Libya's Col Muammar Gaddafi to step down as "all options are open". Coach Jewelrys "We are not saying that Gaddafi needs to be exiled. He must leave power and the quicker he does it, the greater his choice," Mr Sarkozy told journalists. He is hosting a meeting of leaders from the G8 group of wealthy nations in the northern French resort of Deauville. The Arab uprisings, internet regulation and future of nuclear power are all being debated at the two-day summit. The global economy and climate change are also being discussed at the gathering for the leaders of the US, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada. Nike Dunk Low Thousands of police have been deployed as part of a huge security operation and checkpoints have been erected on all roads leading to Deauville. 'Plane ticket' UK Prime Minister David Cameron, also at the G8 summit, has approved the deployment of Apache attack helicopters in Libya, the BBC has learned. There had been speculation about the move after France said it would be deploying French Tiger helicopters. Mr Sarkozy defended Nato's intervention in Libya when he spoke to journalists on Thursday evening, saying "had we not stepped in [the rebel stronghold of] Benghazi would have been wiped off the map". coach outlet He thanked Russia for not blocking the UN resolution authorising force despite Moscow's misgivings, and said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev understood that "the blame lies with Col Gaddafi" and he had said so "frankly and unambiguously". He said the later Col Gaddafi stood down, "the shorter the list of his possible destinations". If Col Gaddafi stepped down and withdrew his forces quickly, President Sarkozy said, "all options are open". "Then we'll look at what the name should be on the plane ticket and even what class he should travel," he joked. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High Mr Cameron has also talked about "turning up the pressure" on Col Gaddafi but the Apache helicopters will probably go into operation "within days" rather than overnight, says BBC political editor Nick Robinson. Correspondents say recent events such as uprisings in the Arab world and Japan's nuclear crisis have given the G8 a new sense of purpose. Interim prime ministers from Tunisia and Egypt - where long-time leaders were overthrown this year - and the head of the Arab League will also be at Deauville for talks on a massive aid plan to help their transition to democracy. As the summit opened, the French and Russian leaders met to agree the sale of four French-built Mistral helicopter carriers to Russia at a cost of at least 400m euros each (£350m; $565m). coach factory outlet Leaders debated ways of improving global nuclear safety after the breakdown of Japan's Fukushima power plant following March's earthquake and tsunami, with Mr Sarkozy insisting that "when it comes to nuclear matters, safety must prevail over cost - that we all agreed on". His wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who is hosting the leaders' spouses, greeted them in a white dress that showed off her pregnancy. US President Barack Obama, who headed to the meeting after a state visit to the UK, is holding a series of one-on-one meetings with leaders including President Sarkozy and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan. He has already met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for discussions over the two countries' long-running row over US plans to create a missile defence shield in central and eastern Europe. Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low President Obama told reporters that the two men were committed to finding an approach that met the security needs of both countries, while Mr Medvedev said the two could work together towards a resolution, but it was unlikely to come in the near future. Points of friction BBC diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall, in Deauville, says that despite President Obama's appeal in London on Wednesday for democratic unity and leadership, there may well be friction at the summit. She adds that Russia's president has opposed air strikes on Libya from the start, though he may offer to mediate in that conflict. Coach Necklaces Africa will also be represented at the summit, as it has been since 2003. Newly elected leaders from Ivory Coast, Niger and Guinea are expected to participate in sessions about promoting democracy. A shift in global influence to emerging powers such as India and China, who are not in the G8, has led to the bloc's relevance being questioned. But speaking in London on Wednesday, President Obama rejected arguments that the rise of superpowers like China and India spelled the demise of American and European influence in the world. Nike Dunk SB High After the summit ends on Friday afternoon, President Obama is scheduled to travel to Poland, the last stop on a four-country tour of Europe that began on Monday in Ireland.

Egypt: Hosni Mubarak and sons to be tried over deaths

Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons are to be tried over the deaths of anti-government protesters, judicial officials say. Coach Boots Mr Mubarak, who was ousted in February, is being detained at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. He and his wife also face allegations of illegally acquiring wealth while they were in power for 30 years. The couple's two sons, Alaa and Gamal, are being held in Cairo's Tora prison and also face fraud charges. The three men have been charged with "premeditated murder of some participants in the peaceful protests of the 25 January revolution," the country's state news agency reported the prosecutor general as saying. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High More than 800 people died in the weeks-long crackdown that preceded Mr Mubarak's departure. The charges come after renewed calls for protests on Friday to demand the trial of the Mubarak family as well as the lifting of emergency law. Egypt's military-led administration appears to be responding to public pressure to bring the former first family to trial, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo. The 83-year-old former leader was admitted to Sharm el-Sheikh's military hospital in April with reported heart problems. Coach Necklaces He and his wife Suzanne - who was also recently examined for possible heart problems after falling ill - have already been questioned at the Red Sea resort on charges of profiteering. Reformers in Egypt believe the Mubarak family accumulated a fortune worth tens of billions of dollars while in power. The Mubaraks have denied this, and little hard evidence has yet been made public. However their bank accounts in Cairo and in Switzerland have been frozen. Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low Suzanne Mubarak was not mentioned in Tuesday's charges announcement, but her situation may have brought the latest development about, adds our correspondent. The 70-year-old was released from custody last week after she returned turned over a villa in a Cairo suburb and $3m (£1.9m) held in bank accounts in Egypt. Her release prompted a backlash, with many fearing the Mubaraks may be negotiating some form of amnesty. More than 20 Mubarak-era ministers and businessmen linked to the regime have been detained since February's uprising. Earlier this month, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly was sentenced to 12 years in jail on charges of money-laundering and profiteering. Flights cancelled as ash cloud heads towards UK

Flights in and out of Scotland have been cancelled as a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland heads towards the UK. Coach Jewelrys BA, KLM, Easyjet, Flybe, Aer Lingus, Loganair and Eastern Airways have cancelled services on Tuesday, and some flights over the Atlantic were delayed. The threat of further disruption led US President Barack Obama to fly out of the Republic of Ireland a day early to get to London for a state visit. Ash from another Icelandic volcano led to huge disruption in Europe last year. Air Force One Mr Obama had been due to fly to the UK on Tuesday morning, but White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the decision to bring his arrival forward had been taken "due to a recent change in the trajectory in the plume of volcanic ash". Nike Dunk High The Met Office forecasts the ash cloud will reach northern and western Scotland overnight, and will clip northern parts of Northern Ireland early on Tuesday. None of England is likely to be affected. A Met Office spokesman said it was difficult to forecast the cloud's direction beyond that because weather systems were changing so rapidly. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond told BBC Two's Newsnight that "most, if not all, flights into and out of Glasgow and Edinburgh and airports to the north will be stopped" on Tuesday morning. Coach Boots But he said services should resume from Glasgow and Edinburgh by about lunchtime, and in other airports by Wednesday morning. Any disruption later in the week should be "limited", he added. Earlier, Mr Hammond said there had already been "modest delays" to flights, particularly those crossing the Atlantic. "Clearly, this is a natural phenomenon which we cannot control, but the UK is now much better prepared to deal with an ash eruption than last year." A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said it was anticipating disruption to many services on Tuesday.Nike Dunk Low In a statement on Monday evening, he said: "Only Ryanair is intending to operate a full service from Edinburgh Airport. Passengers should not travel to the airport without checking with their airline first regarding the status of their flight." Andrew Haines, chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority, said he hoped to avoid a repeat of last year's travel chaos, but he admitted it was still unclear how badly flights would be affected. "We know so much more about the volcanoes. We have an improved model. Coach Necklaces "We have better measuring equipment and we have better relationships with airlines so it should be much better but we're still at the hands of both the weather and the volcano; those are the two uncertainties." Champions League finalists Barcelona are already considering bringing forward their flight to London ahead of Saturday's final at Wembley against Manchester United. The Catalan club had originally planned to travel on Thursday. "Let's see what they [the experts] tell us and if they say we shouldn't risk it we'll travel tomorrow or the day after," said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High During last April's six-day shutdown only a handful of flights took off or landed in the UK. Thousands of Britons found themselves stranded overseas forcing many to make long and expensive journeys home by land. Airlines estimated the shutdown cost them $1.7bn (£1.1bn). The CAA said ash levels would now be graded as low, medium or high, and airlines would be notified if levels reached medium or high. Coach Bracelets Airlines would then consider whether to fly, according to risk assessments already carried out, the CAA added.
