Libya: Nato strike 'kills rebels' in Misrata

At least 11 rebel fighters have been killed in a Nato air strike in the besieged Libyan port city of Misrata, say reports. Nike outlet A rebel commander and witnesses told reporters a Nato warplane had carried out Wednesday's bombing. Nato said it had carried out a strike but could not confirm rebel vehicles were hit. Later, government troops were reported to have re-taken Kufra in the south and a crossing on the Tunisian border. The Wazin border post - near the Tunisian town of Dehiba - had been seized by rebels last week. Fighting is reported to have spilled into Tunisian territory, along Libya's western border Rebel 'reluctance' Misrata has been the scene of intense fighting because of its strategically crucial port. Cheap Nike Dunk Low Rebel fighters, backed by Nato air strikes, claim they have driven back soldiers loyal to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi. The port is a vital lifeline, permitting aid deliveries and refugee evacuations, but they have been interrupted by the fighting - prompting residents to warn that supplies of food and water are dwindling. For some two months, Misrata has been besieged by Col Gaddafi's forces, and rights groups say hundreds of civilians have been killed in the crossfire. Rebels desperate to hold the city have appealed for Nato to step up its air strikes, but reports suggest a strike on Wednesday afternoon went astray with fatal consequences. Nike Dunk High Survivors quoted by US broadcaster CNN said 11 fighters had been killed and two injured in the strike on the coast, while a rebel commander, Abdullah Mohammed, told the New York Times 12 had died and five had been injured in apparently the same attack. Mr Mohammed said rebels had at first been reluctant to confirm Nato's deadly mistake, out of fear it would discourage Nato from mounting further strikes. He said Wednesday's strike was an accident that could have been avoided, but added: "We hope this does not delay strikes on our enemy." A Nato official confirmed alliance aircraft had struck "a number of combat vehicles 10 miles south-east of Misrata port", in an area where a large group of pro-Gaddafi fighters had been broken up on Tuesday. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB High The official said Nato could not "independently verify reports that these vehicles were operated by opposition forces" but said there had been no Nato attack on any building in or around Misrata. Earlier this month several rebel fighters died in a mistaken Nato air raid on the eastern city of Ajdabiya. Kufra 'retaken' Meanwhile, an unnamed doctor told Reuters seven rebel fighters had been killed and four injured when they were hit by artillery fire and rockets from pro-Gaddafi forces at a checkpoint near the front line. Later on Thursday, there were reports of violent clashes in the southern city of Kufra.Nike Dunk Low One rebel told AFP that 60 cars carrying some 250 pro-Gaddafi fighters had arrived in the town and retaken it. He said the rebels had put up "light resistance" but that there were no casualties. Another fighter said the government troops had attacked a courthouse, from which they then flew the green Libyan flag. The rebels' National Transitional Council said told AFP were sending reinforcements to Kufra. In recent days fighting over Misrata port has intensified and rebels say on Tuesday pro-Gaddafi forces fired Russian-made Grad rockets, which rights groups say should not be used in civilian areas. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB Low The Libyan government denies indiscriminately shelling civilian areas. The EU commissioner for humanitarian relief, Kristalina Georgieva, warned she had received reports "of hospitals being overwhelmed by a growing number of wounded" and appealed for "all sides in this conflict to protect civilians and to allow humanitarian operations in Misrata to resume". She said fighting near the port had interrupted aid supplies and made it near impossible for civilians and the wounded to be evacuated. A resident told AP news agency food stocks were dwindling and there was a shortage of drinking water. But an aid ship, the Red Star, was able to take advantage of a brief lull in the fighting on Wednesday to dock and pick up Libyans and stranded migrant workers. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High "Despite heavy shelling of the port area... about 935 migrants and Libyans have been rescued and are now safely en route to [the rebel stronghold of] Benghazi," the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said. The fighting was continuing on Thursday, with some rebels quoted as saying they had made significant strides against loyalist forces.

UK independent schools 'surviving recession'

Private schools are weathering the recession, according to a body representing more than 1,200 of them. Cheap Kids Dunk High The Independent Schools Council's annual census shows a 1% fall in pupil numbers, from 511,886 in January 2010 to 506,500 in January 2011. ISC chief executive David Lyscom said its schools were showing "remarkable resilience" in a difficult economic climate and providing value for money. The proportion of pupils from abroad rose 5.5% to more than 24,500. Of these, 38% were from Hong Kong and China and 34% were from Europe. The next-largest single group of pupils came from Germany - 9.6% of the total. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High In total, 24% were from an ethnic minority background. The census reveals that nearly 139,000 pupils (27%) received help with fees from their schools - on average £1,324 per pupil. 'Remarkable resilience' Average termly fees, excluding nursery fees, were £4,393 and £8,384 for boarders. The proportion of boarders at independent schools also rose - by 1.7% to 68,102, a total of 13.4% of all pupils there. Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low Mr Lyscom said: "ISC independent schools are showing remarkable resilience against a difficult economic background, reflecting the high quality of education that our schools offer to parents, and the value for money that this represents." He said the census showed many pupils benefited from means-tested bursaries, and he urged the government to think carefully about its approach to university admissions. "It would be very wrong to discriminate against these pupils when they apply to university just because they went to a particular type of school," he said. "Our schools help promote social mobility - our statistics show how socially diverse they may be." Cheap Kids Dunk Low Mr Lyscom also welcomed the rise in overseas pupil numbers, which he said showed "the ability of our schools to attract high-quality applicants from overseas in the face of fierce competition from other countries". He added: "This underlines the importance of the UK having a proportionate visa regime which is capable of distinguishing between independent schools and their pupils and other student migrants. "So we are pleased that the UK Border Agency has listened to ISC's message and has granted all independent schools automatic 'highly trusted sponsor' status." The census, completed by 1,232 independent schools in the UK and two in the Republic of Ireland, also revealed that more than 60,000 pupils had been identified as having special education needs (SEN) - the most common being dyslexia or dyspraxia. Nike outlet And a total of 2,449 ISC pupils had been granted a formal statement of SEN.

Key UK economic growth figures to be published

Cheap Nike Dunk SB High Key UK economic growth figures are published later that will show whether the economy has rebounded from the contraction at the end of last year or fallen into a double-dip recession. The economy shrank by 0.5% in the final three months of last year due to heavy snow, taking most analysts by surprise. The market expects GDP to have risen between January and March by slightly more than last quarter's contraction. The figure will help determine interest rates set by the Bank of England. Without the impact of the snow at the end of last year, the Office for National Statistics said growth would have been flat in the fourth quarter of 2011. Interest rates Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low The Bank will be watching the latest figures with interest. It has so far resisted calls to raise interest rates, despite the inflation rate being double its 2% target, largely on the basis that doing so would jeopardise the fragile economic recovery. However, three of the Bank's nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) have voted to raise rates for the past three months. One of them, Andrew Sentance, warned on Tuesday that the Bank's credibility was at stake if did not raise rates. However, the fact that inflation, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index, fell to 4% this month from 4.4% in March, has relieved some of the pressure on the Bank. Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low Whereas many economists had expected the Bank to raise rates as early as May, the market now expects a move later in the summer. A BBC poll of 22 economists published this week found that 14 expected rates to go up in August. But much will depend on the first quarter GDP figures. Strong growth will increase pressure on the MPC to raise rates, on the basis that the recovery is less fragile and inflation must be brought down. Weak growth, or even further contraction, would make any early rise unthinkable, as it would put further pressure on already stretched households and businesses and so undermine future growth. Coach Ergo Handbags Spending cuts The government will also be watching the figures carefully. Weak growth would heighten criticism of its spending cuts, which are starting in earnest this month. Some economists have criticised the speed and size of the cuts, which they say are putting the recovery at risk. The government has argued the cuts are necessary to restore international investors' confidence in the UK, and will lower the country's borrowing costs, which means less money has to be wasted on debt repayments. Nike outlet The coalition will see strong GDP growth, or at least stronger than expected, as vindication of its spending cuts.

'Human cannonball' killed in Kent stunt show

A "human cannonball" stuntman plunged to his death in an accident seen by hundreds of people at a daredevil show. Nike outlet Police said a safety net gave way during the stunt at the Kent County Showground at Detling. The man, 23, had been taken to Maidstone Hospital by air ambulance with multiple head and back injuries. The accident happened at about 1530 BST in a performance by Scott May's Daredevil Stunt Show. Witnesses said he was launched up to 40ft in the air. Rob Hutchinson, 42, watched with his wife and two young children as the man came out to perform his stunt to close the first half of the show. 'Head-first' Mr Hutchinson, a driving instructor from Tenterden, Kent, said: "The net was already up. He climbed out on top, climbed down into the tube, they gave this countdown then he came out of the tube - he was probably 30 or 40ft in the air at least. Coach Ergo Handbags "He turned over and then, the last picture I've got of him, you can see the net is flat on the floor, not up in the air, and he is coming down head-first towards the ground. I saw him hit the floor and bounce." Mr Hutchinson added: "It was like a dummy being thrown..." He said the crowd had numbered about 2,000 people, including several hundred children. Another witness, Paul Armstrong, said he thought the stuntman had been "elevated to about 30ft in the air". Nike Dunk High Not identified He said: "When he was approaching the safety net it seemed to collapse to the ground before he hit it." Insp Tony Ball, of Kent Police, said the force was investigating, the Health and Safety executive had been informed and Maidstone Borough Council would also be involved. A police spokesman said the dead man's next-of-kin had been informed but he had not been formally identified. Scott May's show has been touring in the UK since 1991 in a season which runs from March to September Nike sb shoes As well as the human cannonball stunt, the show also includes pyrotechnics, motorcycle jumps and monster trucks.

AV campaign rows causing coalition conflict, says Huhne

Senior Liberal Democrat minister Chris Huhne has threatened legal action over "untruths" told by Conservatives opposed to the Alternative Vote system. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High Mr Huhne said Tory ministers backing the No campaign undermined their credibility by making false claims about the costs of introducing AV. He warned the row could damage the coalition government. Foreign Secretary William Hague denied Tories had told "untruths", and said the coalition could still work well. The 5 May referendum was a Liberal Democrat condition for entering coalition with the Tories. But with all Lib Dems in the Cabinet backing the change and their Tory colleagues speaking against it, the two parties making up the coalition have been increasingly pitted against one another during the campaign Coach Kristin Handbags Chris Huhne, who refused to rule out resigning as energy secretary over the tensions, said arguments between the Yes and No campaigns would make it a lot more difficult for the coalition to work together in the future. 'Come clean' "It is frankly worrying if you have colleagues who you've respected, and who you've worked well with, who are making claims which have no foundation in truth whatsoever," he said. He threatened legal action over the "extraordinary allegation" by Chancellor George Osborne that expensive new voting machines would be needed to count the votes after an election held under AV rules Cheap Kids Dunk High. "Australia's used [AV] for 80 years without ever using voting machines. If they can't substantiate that, there's simple legal redress," he said. "They had better come clean pretty fast." But Foreign Secretary William Hague said "there was no doubt" that having a more complicated system "would cost more" and that it was a legitimate issue to raise in a campaign. The official No campaign also includes trade unions, sports stars and some senior Labour figures. Former Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett, who is campaigning against AV, agreed the system would cost more in the long term, although he refused to specify a figure. Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low "It's a great shame that this debate degenerated in the way it has," he said, "because this was an opportunity... to lift people's horizons out of the mire of simply slinging mud at each other." Inventing facts Earlier, Lib Dem deputy leader Simon Hughes said he would complain to the Electoral Commission about the Conservative party chairman, Baroness Warsi, "inventing facts". She has said changing the UK voting system to AV would mean more legitimacy for the BNP, and would see politicians "pandering to extremist votes". But William Hague said the baroness had been right to discuss the effect of the change on minor parties. Nike outlet "Will the candidates in marginal seats have to think about how they're going to get the second, third and fourth preferences of people who have voted for the BNP?" He added: "These things are therefore not disputed facts, they're matters of opinion about the implication of AV and they should be understood as that." The row about switching to the Alternative Vote has grown more fierce and more personal over the past couple of days. Nick Clegg described those campaigning for a "No" vote as "a right-wing clique who want to keep things the way they are," in the Independent on Sunday. Cheap Kids Dunk Low William Hague insisted that, despite the row over AV, the coalition was working well. "Yes, we all have strong feelings but at the end of it the coalition will work very well together as it is at the moment. He added: "That is inevitably going to undermine their own credibility and that is not good for the coalition." A spokesman for the No to AV campaign said senior Lib Dems were getting "more and more desperate". Coach Poppy Handbags He said: "We will continue to make the case for one person, one vote and urge the British people to vote against the unfair and expensive alternative vote system."

Smog alert for England and Wales

The government has issued a "smog alert" in England and Wales for ozone and polluting particles known as PM10s, which can affect people's health. Nike Dunk Low The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said high levels of pollution are expected from 1500 BST on Thursday and over the Easter weekend. It said the alert was due to warm and still conditions brought on by a high pressure system. Defra is urging the public to take "sensible precautions". It said some people, including those who have asthma - and particularly the elderly - could be affected by the high pollution levels and may notice an impact on their breathing. It advised people to avoid taking exercise outside in the afternoon if they are susceptible to the pollutants, and not to take unnecessary short car journeys in a bid to help reduce the build-up of ozone. Cheap Kids Dunk High High temperatures Defra said its freephone helpline - 0800 556677 - would give regular updates on the levels of particles, and also offer health advice to those who may be particularly sensitive to air pollution. Cher Piddock, an Asthma UK adviceline nurse, said the smog warning was a "timely reminder" that the combination of warm weather and pollution could pose health risks. "Around two-thirds of people with asthma say pollution triggers their condition, so Asthma UK recommends that people who have pollution as a trigger avoid going out if air quality is poor. "We also recommend that people always carry their inhaler, avoid exercising outdoors on hot days, especially in the afternoon, and keep windows shut whenever possible," she said. Coach Leather Handbags The smog alert comes as travel plans are getting under way as Britain begins a run of two double bank holiday weekends during a period of prolonged warm weather. Rail works will affect some routes, and major motorways - including a now fully reopened M1 - were expected to become very busy from Thursday lunchtime. About 18m people are expected to use their cars, but the AA predicted high fuel prices will mean people will make shorter journeys. Ground level ozone is formed when sunlight acts on nitrogen dioxides and other atmospheric substances which come from a range of sources, including petrol and other fuels. Particulates, or PM10s, also come from sources such as vehicles. Cheap Kids Dunk Low The smog alert - the first for more than a year - comes as monitoring in London revealed that one site, on the Marylebone Road, has exceeded EU rules for the number of days in the year in which high levels of PM10s are permitted. The UK will not face fines for the breach, as the EU has given Britain an extension, which means it has until June before it has to start meeting the standards in the capital. Earlier, Green Party London Assembly member Jenny Jones said London's residents and visitors should be made aware of the high pollution levels ahead of the royal wedding. "We have the prospect of hundreds of thousands of visitors flocking to central London, to stand around all day in one of the most beautiful, but polluted cities in Europe. Cheap Nike Dunk SB High "The Mayor should be making people aware of what they are breathing in and the risks to their health. "It is important information for people to know if they suffer from a pre-existing respiratory problem," she said. Meanwhile the warm weather is set to continue through the Easter weekend for most of the UK, especially in England and Wales. Large parts of the country have had warm sunshine for the past week. The top temperature forecast for Thursday was in London, at 26C. Wednesday's temperatures in the city were the warmest of the year so far, with 26.5C recorded. Coach Travel Handbags This year's late Easter and the royal wedding, on 29 April, have resulted in some workers only having to take only three days' leave off next week to get an 11-day break.
